Previous TW Members' reflections

Being able to take part in publishing a magazine is unforgettable. Writing an article on a particular topic is not a rare university experience, but having it printed in a magazine is another story—knowing your work will be read by more than just your professors. Then there is the teamwork involved in designing the magazine’s layout, arranging different articles in a sensible order so they cohere with one another, and cross-checking each other’s work.

The most memorable experience for me was the TSC exhibition, where I was able to connect directly with individuals affected by Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) and their families, feeling both their fight and their incredible positivity. I also witnessed the sincere and vibrant engagement of the TW members, and learned how translation can truly amplify the voices of the community and unite diverse social groups. Being part of this event constantly reminds me to, instead of being stuck in my own ego, keep my heart open and engage with the world wholeheartedly.

Looking back at the Translation Workshop with NGO partners, I see how much it shaped my understanding of language. Words can build trust and amplify voices that deserve and should be heard. It is no longer just a project or a course for me. It has become a lasting reminder of why translation work matters.

When I was working in the Faculty of Arts Society Editorial Board, I had a chance to ask my members to interview Daphne, the Manager of the previous Translation Workshop cabinet, but what I didn’t realise is that when I got in the Translation Workshop cabinet myself, I got to not only work with a member with a former FASEB member, but also interview Daphne myself. I guess you can really say the treasure is the friends we made along the way.

I am grateful for the unforgettable memories the Translation Workshop has given me. In a small yet complete team, we each took on our roles to compile the Transfeed magazine. Every group meeting with Professor Pan and my classmates was both efficient and engaging. As the team’s CAT specialist, I was responsible for learning the software and then passing that knowledge on to everyone else. I managed to resolve every issue my classmates encountered, which was a challenge that brought me a great sense of accomplishment.
